The Worcestershire Black Knights competed in our first preseason fixture of the year against Welwyn Hatfield Mosquitoes. Our previous meeting with the mosquitoes ended 48-20 to the Knights, in our second associate game last year, so both teams were well prepared with Welwyn wanting to get revenge!
The game started off with a bang. The Black Knights scored on their first offensive drive with a 40yd run from Slot Receiver Mike Cimarosti, but were unable to convert the 2pt attempt. 6-0 Knights! Welwyn’s run game looked very strong as they marched down the field but were unable to convert the good field position into points. At the start of the second half the Black Knights scored again with a 20yd run by Running Back Jay Styles, and this time were successful in converting the 2pts. 14-0 Knights at Half Time.
It wasn’t to be an easy day though, as the Mosquitoes came back with a bang and a 98yd Fumble Recovery TD to bring the game to within a score, at 14-6. Throughout the second half, the teams exchanged possession and field position with a couple of interceptions from Worcestershire DBs Chris Morse and Steve Bourne. A couple of solid defensive stands from both sides left the game very evenly poised. At the end of the 3rd Quarter, the Black Knights extended their lead even more with a run by powerful QB Matt Edgar, but again, failing to convert the 2pts, left the score at 20-6 which is how it was to remain. Unfortunately, the game was called with 8 minutes to go in the 4th quarter due to player safety with 4 Mosquitoes going down.
The Worcestershire Black Knights would like to thank the Welwyn Hatfield Mosquitoes for a well fought contest and wish their players a speedy recovery!
