Over the past month or so, the Worcestershire Black Knights American Football team have played their first two games ever as a club, with mixed fortunes.
Firstly, the team played East Essex Sabres on the 13th August at Kings Norton. The game didn’t start off well for the Knights, going 14-0 down in the first quarter after some mistakes on special teams plays. In the second quarter, the team picked up, stopped the Sabres on multiple drives and moved the ball themselves. At half time, the score was still 14-0. The team fought bravely in the second half, nearly scoring twice but a couple of 4th quarter mistakes allows the Sabres to increase their lead to 28-0, which is how it finished. Overall, it was a very good game to start off with against an experienced and hard hitting Sabres team.
Second up were the Welwyn Hatfield Mosquitoes, a less experienced team in a very similar position to ourselves. This was lined up to be a great game, and a great game it was. The Black Knights started off very strongly, going 20-0 up very quickly at the start of the second quarter. However, a kickoff return TD, a pick six and a long offensive drive quickly levelled the scores up at half time. In the 3rd quarter the teams were very evenly matched with the Black Knights getting the only score to make it 26-20 going into the 4th. The final quarter of the game proved to be very one sided with the Black Knights getting 4 scores without reply from the Mosquitoes. The game finished at 48-20 to the Worcestershire Black Knights and meant in their second ever game they have achieved their first ever win!
We would like to thank the East Essex Sabres and the Welwyn Hatfield Mosquitoes for coming up and giving the team two excellent games and wish them all the best in getting into the league for the 2017 season.
