This weekend was the first ever home league game for the Worcestershire Black Knights and with it brought the challenge of the Jurassic Coast Raptors. Both teams had lost their first game of the season with the Black Knights losing 8-6 to Torbay Trojans and Raptors losing 36-7 to Bristol Apache. Both teams came to King Norton RFC with something to prove.
The game started quickly with the Raptors scoring quickly with a strong run and then again soon after from a misplaced pass by Black Knights Quarterback Matt Edgar making the score 14-0 with two successful Extra Point conversions. The Black Knights struggled to find their groove offensively until the start of the second quarter when a 90 yard run by Tight End James Lawrence lit up the field to close the gap at 14-7. A second Black Knights score, sandwiched between two more scores from the Raptors midway through the 2nd quarter including another Pick 6, left the Black Knights with a lot to do going into the 2nd half trailing 28-14.
Starting the 3rd quarter with a bang was the Black Knights, scoring on another run by Tight End James ‘The Gazelle’ Lawrence to close the gap at 28-20. However, a missed Extra Point attempt left the Black Knights needing a TD and a 2 point Conversion to draw level. Throughout the 3rd and 4th quarter the Worcestershire Black Knights defence stood tough, with some great work from Linebacker Tom Duffield and Defensive Back Jake Cassidy stopping any real progress from being made by the Raptors.
Heading midway into the 4th quarter with the Knights still trailing, the game started to get edgy with both teams offense’s stalling on multiple drives. At the two minute warning the Black Knights had the ball just inside their own 40yd line driving down for that all important final score to give themselves a chance to draw level. Some powerful running by Fullback Sam Bennett and Running Back James Styles brought the team to the Raptors 10yd line. 3 plays later the ball was in the Endzone curtosy of Sam Bennett and the score was 26-28 with the Knights needing to convert the 2pt attempt to level it up. Unfortunately, on another strong run the team ended up 2yds short, leaving the scores at 28-26. The Raptors knelt out the rest of the game, and that’s how it ended.
Another heart wrenching loss for the Worcestershire Black Knights leaves them at 0-2 after 2 games. Sunday 7th May sees the return of the Torbay Trojans to Kings Norton Rugby Club with a 2.30 KO. The Black Knights will be hungry for a win after going down 8-6 to the Trojans last week!
